용접구조용강은 구조적인 (사람으로 치면 뼈대)
용도에 사용되면서 강재의 연결 방법을

용접 연결을 채택할 때
사용하는 탄소강 강재를 말합니다.

SM이라는 용어가 나타나는
강재를 용접구조용이라고 하고

KS 규격 개정 이전의 규격은 SWS로 Steel (강),
Welding (용접), Structure (구조)의 약자인 SWS 였다가

지금은 SM (Steel Marine)이라는 약자를 사용하고 있습니다.
SM규격으로는 KS에는

SM400A,  SM400B,  SM400C.
SM490A,  SM490B,  SM490C.

SM490YA, SM490YB.
SM520B, SM520C. SM570

모두 11가지 규격이 나타나고 있으며
SM기호 뒤에 나타나는 숫자는

기계적 성질인 인장강도의 하한치이며
인장강도가 높게 나타날수록 상위 강종으로,

일반적으로는 숫자가 높을수록 사용 빈도가 적고,
자재의 조달은 어려워지고,

납기는 길어지며,
가격은 높아지고,

생산에 제한 조건이 까다로워집니다.
강종의 화학 성분으로는 대체적으로

C (탄소) 0.20%, Si (규소) 0.55%, Mn (망간) : 1.60%
P와 S : 0.05%이하, 나머지는 Fe (철)로 관리되는 탄소강입니다.

위에 나타나는 강종들은 주로 후판과
H-BEAM에서  나타나는 강종으로

다른 형강류에서도 나타날 수 있지만
아주 제한적으로 나타나는 강종입니다.

※ Yield Strength
Value of load strength which a specified permanent elongation
occurs in tensile test, expressed by dividing the load by original
sectional area of parallel portion.

For material which dose not exhibit clear yield point,
the yield strength is used instead of yield point.

※ Tensile Strength
Value of maximum load during tensile test divided by the
original sectional area of parallel portion.

As for materials in which the maximum load withstood by test piece
after yielding is lower than the upper yield point, it shall be the
value of the maximum load after yielding divided by original
sectional area of parallel portion.

※ Carbon Steel
Steel made by alloy iron and carbon of which carbon content
is generally within a range from 0.02% to 2%.

Further,  a small amount of silicon, manganese, phosphorus,
sulfur, etc. are usually contained.

For convenience, carbon steel may be sometimes classified as
according to the carbon content or hardness (including strength).

Classification by carbon content : Low carbon steels,
medium carbon steels and high carbon steels.

Classification by hardness : Extra mild steel,
mild steel and hard steel .
