A656 강재는 Plate 규격으로, 열간압연 (hot rolled),
고강도(high strength), 저합금 (low-alloyed)
성형성 향상 (improved formability) 규격입니다.
많이 사용되는 ASTM 고강도 강판으로
A572-50 — 항복강도 345 MPa/50 ksi 강판이 사용되지만
고강도, 저합금, 성형성 향상 강판으로는
A656 Gr.70 — 항복강도 485 MPa/70 ksi 강판이 사용됩니다.
A656 강판과 A572 강판의 차이는 특히 탄소량에서 차이가 큽니다.
A656 강판은 탄소량 0.18% maximum
A572 강판은 (A572-50 기준) 0.23% maximum 으로
A572 규격 대비, A656 강판의 탄소량이 낮습니다.
탄소강에서 탄소량은 강도 결정의 가장 중요한 원소입니다.
A656, A572 강재 규격 모두 Low-alloy,
High strength 강재라는 규정에서는 같습니다.
탄소량이 많으면 강도가 높아지고 용접성은 떨어지지만
탄소량이 적으면 강도는 떨어지고 용접성은 향상됩니다.
하지만 A656 Gr.70 강재는 A572-50 대비, 탄소량은 떨어지지만
강도는 높도록 설계된 재질로, 성형성 향상 강종이기도 합니다.
A656 강재는 높은 강도, 향상된 성형성, 좋은 용접성을 바탕으로
truck frames, crane booms, rail cars, brackets 용도로 사용됩니다.

보통 약 800℃ 이상(통상 A3 변태점 이상)의 고온에서 압연 된 강판

Generally speaking carbon steels contain up to 2% total alloying
elements, and can be subdivided into as following categories
Low-carbon steels, which contain up to 0.30% C
Medium-carbon steels, which contain 0.30% to 0.60% C
High-carbon steels, which contain 0.60% to 1.00% C
